Union artillery of Roemer's 34th New York and Twitchell's 7th Maine batteries, 3rd division, 9th Army Corps bombarding the Confederate-held city's defences. The Siege of Petersburg, which lasted from June 1864 until March 1865, foreshadowed the trench warfare battles of World War I.
