North view of Traitor's Gate, Tower of London, 1798. On its completion in 1097 the Tower provided accommodation for the king, but in later centuries was used as a prison, armoury and military store. The gate was built during the reign of Edward I to provide an entrance to the Tower directly from the Thames. In Tudor times it was the entrance through which several prominent prisoners were brought into the Tower before their imprisonment and execution, including Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More and Catherine Howard.
