Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, Chinese Communist leaders, c1960s(?). After Mao's (1893-1976) death, Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) gradually emerged as the de facto leader of China. He repudiated Mao's Cultural Revolution and oversaw the beginning of the transformation of the Chinese economy by allowing the introduction of market forces.
