Field Marshal Marquis Oyama Iwao, Japanese soldier, Mukden, Manchuria, 1906. Detail from a stereoscopic card. Japan was leased the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria as one of the terms of the Treaty of Portsmouth ending the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, in which Oyama (1842-1916) commanded Japan's land forces. Today Mukden is the Chinese city of Shenyang.
