Clown costume, 19th century. This embroidered outfit would have been worn by Joseph Grimaldi, a celebrated London clown. Some of the decorative features were added after Grimaldi's death in 1837. It is a typical example of the costumes worn by clowns up until the beginning of the 20th century.
