Barnard Castle, Durham, c1905. View of the ruins of the castle overlooking the River Tees. The castle was originally built by the Normans but reached the height of its importance in the second half of the 12th century when it was in the hands of the Balliol family. It later came into the hands of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and passed to King Richard III through his wife, Anne, who was the Earl's daughter. The castle fell into ruin in the 16th century.
