Count Sergey Volkonsky, Russian soldier and Decembrist rebel, Irkutsk, Siberia, Russia, 1845. A Major-General in the Russian army, Volkonsky (1788-1865) was one of the leaders of the Decembrist revolt in 1825 in which army officers rebelled against the succession of Tsar Nicholas I following the death of Alexander I. The uprising failed and Volkonsky was exiled to Siberia. From a private collection.
