Nelson A Miles, US Army general, at his headquarters, 1898. Miles (1839-1925) served in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. In 1895 he was appointed Commanding General of the US Army, a post he held throughout the Spanish-American War of 1898, in which he personally led the invasion of Puerto Rico.
