Jock McAvoy, British boxer, 1938. Born Joseph Patrick Bamford, McAvoy (1908-1971) changed his name in order to hide the fact he was boxing from his mother. During his career he held the British and Empire middleweight titles and, in 1935, knocked out world middleweight champion Ed 'Babe' Risko in the first round in a non-title fight. In 1936 he made an unsuccessful challenge for the world light-heavyweight championship, losing to the American champion John Henry Lewis on points. McAvoy won 132 fights over his career, with just 14 defeats. A Churchman's Cigarettes picture card.
