General Edmund Alllenby commanded the Cavalry Corps of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in the early part of the war after distinguishing himself in covering the British retreat after the Battle of Mons. As the conflict became increasingly one of static trench warfare cavalry became increasingly tactically irrelevant.
