Worshipping before an idol, Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon, Burma, 1908. Buddhist tradition holds that the Shwedagon Pagoda was built before the Buddha died in 486 BC, but archaeologists believe its construction is more likely to date from between the 6th and 10th century.
