Captain Sir Edward Chichester, British naval officer, Cape Town, South Africa, 1900. During the Boer War Chichester served as Chief Naval Transport Officer, overseeing the disembarkation of the troops, horses, guns, and provisions arriving from Britain. He was famous in the United States for having 'stood by' US Admiral George Dewey at the Blockade of Manila during the Spanish American War of 1898 when a German naval squadron appeared to be about to threaten the Americans.
