Valerie Hobson, British actress, c1936-c1939. Valerie Hobson (1917-1998) was a leading lady in the British cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. Among her best known roles were as Estella in David Lean's 1946 adaptation of 'Great Expectations' and as Edith d'Ascoyne in the 1949 Ealing Comedy 'Kind Heart and Coronets'. She achieved a second, unsought, moment in the spotlight as the wife of John Profumo, the Tory minister at the centre of the Christine Keeler affair in 1963.
