Ralph Allen, 18th century British entrepreneur and philanthropist, 19th or early 20th century. Allen (1693-1764) made two fortunes, by improving the postal service in England and then from the quarrying the stone used in the construction of the Georgian buildings of Bath. He built himself a Palladian mansion, Prior Park, that overlooks the city. Allen donated stone and funding for the building of the city's Mineral Water Hospital, completed in 1738. Lantern slide.
