Press advertisment for British Coal, 1966. In a photograph taken for a press ad, a woman adjusts the volume on a radiogram. Some forty years prior to micro audio systems being taken for granted, these state of the art entertainment systems could be found in living rooms across the land. Stereo sound was yet to be introduced so sound was reproduced in mono through a single speaker. The photograph was taken to promote the use of coal in a competitive market place where the cleaner gas supply was gaining in popularity. Taken in the heyday of coal production in the South Yorkshire area the photo was commissioned by British Coal, who had their headquarters close to the studio in Mexborough, where it was taken.
