North Eastern Railway plaque, National Railway Museum, York, North Yorkshire. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was established in 1854 when four railway companies merged. It was absorbed into the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) when Grouping rationalised the British rail network into four main regional railway companies in 1923.
