'Joseph and Potiphar's Wife', c1626. A scene from the Old Testament. Joseph, after being sold into slavery by his brothers, is taken to Egypt where he becomes head of the household of Potiphar, captain of the palace guard. Potiphar's wife invites Joseph to bed, an invitation which he refuses, pointing to his integrity. Enraged, she falsely accuses Joseph of attemting to rape her, and Potiphar has him imprisoned. In prison, Joseph comes to the Pharaoh's attention because of his ability to interpret the dreams of other prisoners. Found in the collection of the State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.
