Head of Doryphoros, early 1st century. Roman work, after the Greek original of the 440s BC by Polykleitos. Polykleitos designed his Doryphoros, a figure of an athlete carrying a spear on his shoulder, to demonstrate the proportions of the human body as depicted in sculpture. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
