St Paul's Cathedral, London, during the Blitz, World War II, 29 December 1940. This iconic photograph shows the dome of Sir Christopher Wren's cathedral intact as the city around it burns from German incendiary bombs. The raid of 29 December was one of the heaviest on London, causing a firestorm in the City that has been described as the Second Great Fire of London.
