German prisoner, Warsaw Uprising, Poland, World War II, 1 August-2 October 1944. The Warsaw Uprising was an operation mounted by the Polish resistance against the Nazi occupation. It was timed to coincide with the arrival of the advancing Red Army in Warsaw, but controversially, the Soviets stopped their advance in the city's eastern suburbs, leaving the Poles to fight the much more heavily armed Germans on their own. The uprising was put down after 63 days of bitter fighting with heavy casualties, particularly amongst Warsaw's civilian population.
