Nazi leaders Hermann Göring and Rudolf Hess at the Nuremberg Trials, Germany, c1945-c1946. Between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946 the 24 surviving most senior Nazi leaders were tried before the International Military Tribunal in the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg. Hess (1894-1987), Hitler's deputy received a sentence of life imprisonment, dying in Spandau prison in Berlin after serving 41 years. Göring (1893-1946), the commander of the Luftwaffe, was sentenced to death, although he committed suicide before he could be executed.
