Japanese troops at Haiphong, French Indochina, World War II, 1940. Situated on the coast of what is now Vietnam, Haiphong was the main naval base in French Indochina. The Japanese invaded Indochina on 22 September 1940 after an agreement was signed with the Vichy regime in France to allow their troops to enter the country. The Japanese encountered resistance from some French forces but the fighting was over by 26 September.
