Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was one of Britain's greatest military figures. Admiral Nelson (1758-1805) was the victor at a number of naval battles in the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of the Nile (1798), Copenhagen (1801) and most famously, Trafalgar (1805) where he was fatally wounded. This portrait is after Lemuel Francis Abbott (circa 1760-1802) and shows Nelson in rear-admiral's uniform wearing the Star and Ribbon of the Bath and the Naval Gold Medal, awarded for his victory at the Battle of St Vincent (1797). Taken from R. J. Lea, Ltd's first series of Chairman Miniature cigarette cards, 1912.
