Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Austrian composer. Haydn (1732-1809) was a leading figure in the development of classical music during the 18th century. He established the form of the string quartet, and was the first great composer of symphonies, of which he produced a total of 108. He was a major influence on the work of Mozart and Beethoven.
