Rafael M Merchan, born in Manzanillo in 1843 was editor of El Siglo (The Century) and 'El Pais' (the country) (1868) published in his famous article 'Laboremos' (Let's Work). He emigrated to New York, lead the revolution (1869), published some notable works, among them, 'Cuba Justification for the war of Independence ' (Cuba, justification de su guerra de Independencia) (1896), was Minister of Cuba in Spain in 1903.
