The Drake Well, Pennsylvania, America, 1859. Drilled by Edwin Laurentine Drake (1819-1880) in 1859, it is the first commercial oil well in the United States. Here we see Colonel Drake, in the top hat, talking to his engineer. In the background are the three men who sank the well. From 'All About Inventions and Discoveries' printed by Cassell and Company Ltd., 1918.
