Directions for movement of various bodies of troops prior to the battle of Solway Moss, 1542'. The Battle of Solway Moss took place on Solway Moss on the English side of the Anglo-Scottish Border in November 1542, between forces from England and Scotland. The battle came about when King Henry VIII (1491-1547) broke from the Roman Catholic Church. Henry had asked James V of Scotland (1512-1542), his nephew, to do the same but James ignored his uncle's request resulting in Henry sending his troops into battle against him. James was ultimately defeated and died some two weeks later. From 'Illustrations of Scottish History' published by Edinburgh: James Stillie, 1889.
