The Engine Room of a Holland Submarine, c1916. The Holland-class were the first submarines built for the Royal Navy. They were built by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness. The first three of which were designed by John Philip Holland (1840-1914). Hollands were built under licence from the Holland Torpedo Boat Company/Electric Boat Company. From 'All About Inventions and Discoveries' printed by Cassell and Company Ltd., 1918.
