'Charles George Gordon', (1833-85), English soldier, 1894-1907. British army officer and administrator. Also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum. He saw action in the Crimean War as an officer in the British Army. In the early 1860s, Gordon and his men were instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion. He was killed at Khartoum 26 January 1885 when forces of the Mahdi overwhelmed the city. From "Ogden's Guinea Gold Cigarettes".
