This athletics stadium was completed in 1990 to help host the World Student Games of 1991 and was home of the City of Sheffield Athletics Club. It has also been used by the Sheffield Eagles Rugby League team between 1991-2009, and hosted Rotherham United Football Club between 2008 and 2012 when they moved into their new stadium. The stadium was closed by Sheffield City Council to save money in 2013 and was subsequently demolished.
