Trafalgar Square, Westminster, London, c2000s. Aerial view. The Battle of Trafalgar took place in 1805 and destroyed Napoleon's hopes of invading Britain. The square was planned in the 1820s but was not named after the battle until 1830. The fountains were fed by an artesian well until the late 19th century, but are now fed from the mains and powered by electricity. The square has seen many political rallies, as well as being the scene of boisterous celebrations and outpourings of national pride on New Year's Eve and major football matches.
