'Milton Court', 1912, (1914). Milton Court, Dorking, Surrey, is a 16th century country estate. Originally a priory, the estate was granted to George Evelyn, father of the diarist John Evelyn (1620-1706). In the 19th century, it was bought by Lachlan Mackintosh Rate, a wealthy lawyer, banker and philanthropist, who employed William Burges (1827-1881) to substantially remodel the building, in an ornate Jacobean style.
