'Engagement off Dominica', c1782. An attack by Admiral François-Joseph Paul, Comte de Grasse (1723-1788) of the French fleet, on the Van Squadron of the British fleet at the Battle of the Saintes on 9 April 1782. The British, commanded by Admiral George Rodney (1718-1792), won the battle, forcing the French and Spanish to abandon their planned invasion of Jamaica. From Old Naval Prints, by Charles N.
