'The Glorious First of June', c1795. The battle known as The Glorious First of June was the first and largest major naval engagement between Britain and France during the French Revolutionary Wars. The British fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Howe, defeated the French under Louis-Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse, 400 nautical miles west of Ushant, Brittany. From Old Naval Prints, by Charles N.
