'Aboukir Bay', c1799. The Battle of the Nile, also known as the Battle of Aboukir Bay, was a major naval battle fought between the British Navy and the Navy of the French Republic at Aboukir Bay, Egypt, on 1-3 August 1798. The British, commanded by Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) decisively defeated the French fleet under Vice-Admiral François-Paul Brueys d'Aigalliers.
