'Remember Nelson', c1812. On 13 March 1811, a British squadron engaged with a French and Venetian fleet off the coast of Croatia at the Battle of Lissa. The commander of the British squadron, Captain William Hoste (1780-1828), sent the signal Remember Nelson to rally his crews, who then went on to defeat the larger enemy fleet by means of superior seamanship and gunnery.
