Courtyard of Montagu House, Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London, 1830 (1878). Montagu House was a grand 17th century private house, which became the first home of the British Museum. It was sold to the trustees of the museum in 1759 and was its home until it was demolished in the 1840s to make way for larger premises.
