Old Crofters Cottage, near Broadford, looking North, Isle of Skye, Scotland, 20th century. Crofting is a form of land tenure and small-scale food production particular to the Scottish Highlands, the islands of Scotland, and formerly the Isle of Man. Characterised by its common working communities, the Crofters' Holdings (Scotland) Act 1886 provided security of tenure, encouraging tenants to improve land, as it ensured control could be transferred within families and passed to future generations.
