Detail of Norman Font, in 12th century Church within Porchester Castle, Hampshire, 20th century. Built within a former Roman fort at Portchester, by Henry II in 1160-1172 extended by Edward II and Richard II. The castle saw the disembarkation for several campaigns to France led by England's kings. The Normans in the 10th and 11th centuries gave their name to Normandy, they were descended from Norse raiders and pirates from Denmark, Iceland and Norway.
