St. Basils in Evening light, Red Square, Moscow , c1970s. City square (plaza) separating the Kremlin, from historic merchant quarter of Kitai-gorod. Originally the main marketplace, it is also the site of public ceremonies, proclamations, and the occasional coronation. St Basil's Cathedral was built from 1555-61 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It is a world-famous landmark.
