James II, King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1685, (1932). The second surviving son of King Charles I, James (1633-1701) became king on the death of his brother, Charles II. A Catholic, he lost the throne in 1688 to the Protestant William of Orange in what came to be known as the 'Glorious Revolution'.
