'Drake's Funeral', January 1596, (c1880). Sir Francis Drake (c1540- 27 January 1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era. He survived canonball fire two weeks prior to his death of dysentry, in January 1596 while anchored off the coast of Portobelo, Panama. Before dying, he asked to be dressed in his full armour. He was buried at sea in a lead coffin, near Portobelo. Divers continue to search for the coffin. From British Battles on Land and Sea, Vol. I, by James Grant.
