'Nottingham Castle', c1880. Located in a strategic position on a promontory known as Castle Rock. The first Norman castle was built in 1067 on the orders of William the Conqueror. For centuries the castle was one of the most important in England for nobles and royalty alike. In March 1194, a historic battle took place at Nottingham castle between King Richard I of England and supporters of Prince John, including the Sheriff of Nottingham. On 19 October 1330, King Edward III, staged a coup d'etat against his mother Isabella of France, and her lover, Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March. From British Battles on Land and Sea, Vol. I, by James Grant. [Cassell Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York, c1880]
