Pickering Castle, c11th century, (c1990-2010). Motte and bailey (wooden castle). Reconstruction drawing of a motte-and-bailey fortification in Pickering, North Yorkshire, England. Originally a timber and earth motte and bailey castle built by the Normans under William the Conqueror in 1069-1070. It was developed into a stone motte and bailey castle.
