Those who chose to avoid the elegance and formality of Newport and the great hotels at Saratoga (where $1,500,000 was spent annually), sought out places like Mountain House in the Catskills, the smaller resorts along the shore, or one of the White Mountain hotels, which were reached by coaches like these.
