'Ceylon. Built by King Tissa about 307 B.C. to contain the collar-bone of Buddha, the Thuparama is one of the eight sacred places at Anuradhapura. The dagoba, 63 feet high and 40 in diameter, stands on a platform reached by stone steps; slender monoliths with carved capitals surround it', c1920. Thuparama is the earliest historical stupas of the Sri LankaÆs ancient sacred capital of Anuradhapura. Stupas are Buddhist sacred places of veneration, typically characterized by outstanding architectural shapes. From Geographical Magazine, Volume 2, c1920.
