'Central America. Ringed in by peaks of the Guatemalan Cordillera, Lake Atitlan fills a crater 1,000 feet deep near the volcanic cones of San Pedro and Atilan. It possesses no visible outlet for its waters', c1920. Lake Atitlan is located in the Guatemalan Highlands, by the Sierra Madre mountains. Its name means at the water in Aztec language.
