'Ethelred despatching a Letter by his Son', c1860, (c1860). By the end of 1013 King ãthelred had been forced into exile in Normandy. However when Sweyn died suddenly on 3rd February 1014, English noblemen sent a deputation to ãthelred to negotiate his restoration to the throne. He was required to declare his loyalty to them and to bring in reforms. The negotiated demands are the first recorded pact between a King and his subjects.
