'King Stephen in Prison', c1860, (c1860). Stephen (c1092-1154) known as Stephen of Blois, grandson of William the Conqueror and King of England from 1135 to 1154. Stephen was imprisoned in 1141 by Empress Matilda (c1102-1167), the claimant to the English throne during the civil war known as the Anarchy.
