'Miss May Belfort Welcoming', c.1895, (1946). Portrait of the Irish singer, May Belfort, who lived and worked in Paris. She gained notoriety for her song, 'Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow'. Lautrec made several portraits of her and she is often depicted holding a small black cat, a reference both to her signature song and to her lesbian affairs. From The Etchings of the French Impressionists and Their Contemporaries, by Edward T. Chase. [The Hyperion Press, Paris, 1946]
